June PragPub Magazine

Making sense of any historical development requires ignoring a seemingly infinite number of irrelevant details. When Charles Babbage was busy inventing the computer nearly two centuries ago, the rest of the world was busy making other kinds of history. The invention of the cotton gin, the battle of the Alamo, and the first use of anesthesia were all historically important developments of the day, but they had little or nothing to do with Babbage’s Analytical Engine.

Still, it is interesting to view historical events in their broader context. It’s a matter of selection.

This month in PragPub we revisit Victorian London and a soirée where the Analytical Engine is introduced. Along the way we’ll meet a couple of Babbage’s friends, Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens, and we’ll have occasion to talk about the British bureaucracy, street musicians of the Victorian era, and Jack the Ripper.

On a more contemporary note, Erica Sadun and Erin Dees are on hand, offering up insights on Swift development and playgrounds, saving money with a software-and-hardware DIY project, and becoming an effective leader by understanding your unique strengths.

And our regular columnists here, of course. Russ Olsen looks at algorithmic complexity, Marcus Blankenship explains how to do excellent one-on-one meetings, John Shade takes on self-driving cars, your editor reflects on the latest tech news, and Antonio Cangiano has all the latest tech books. Oh, and there’s a puzzle.
