Welcome to December! The end of the year is in sight at last.
Join Luc Perkins, author of Seven Databases in Seven Weeks in this episode of the Test & Code podcast at https://testandcode.com/53 (you can pick up the book at pragprog.com/book/pwrdata).
And read on for details of this month's issue of PragPub magazine, featuring matters of security, infinity, history, abstraction, leadership and more, now available from theprosegarden.com.
December PragPub Magazine
Last month in PragPub Aaron Bedra showed us how to implement time-based one-time password-based multi-factor authentication. (And how to say it.) This month Troy Hunt advances that discussion, digging into two-factor authentication and Universal 2nd Factor authentication (U2F), and in particular, Google’s Advanced Protection Program. Troy discusses five separate levels of auth using common approaches, explains briefly how they work, and then shows some common threats they’re at risk of. Finally, he walks you through, step-by-step, the process of setting up Google’s Advanced Protection Program, which goes beyond SMS-based two-factor authentication to true U2F. It’s a whirlwind course in authentication for a scary world.
What else? Erin Dees is back this month with a fun article on math, exploring the counterintuitive properties of the infinite. And Mike Swaine continues his series on computer history, touching on Apple, IBM, Microsoft, Digital Research, and what happened when the Big Boys discovered the microcomputer market.
Our regular contributors are all on board, too. Life is complicated — but programming has a trick for putting complications in their place. Russ Olsen explores how to best use the tool of abstraction. Your team has you figured out — or so they think. Do you know what their theory of you is? Marcus Blankenship looks at theories of leadership. And John Shade reflects on Richard Feynman’s contrarian advice, while Antonio Cangiano has all the new tech books, and there’s a puzzle.
We hope you enjoy this December issue of PragPub and that you have a happy and prosperous New Year!
