| | Just about every year since 1995, Matz has dropped a release of Ruby on Christmas Day. In 1995 we saw Ruby 0.95, the first public release. This year, 30 years later, we're getting Ruby 4, a brand new major release. | | |
| | | I don't want to talk about the new language features, or about my personal 28 years of loving Ruby, or the resurgence in interest in this wonderful tool. | | |
| | | Instead, I'd like to say "thank you" to Matz. | | |
| | | | Yukihiro Matsumoto first started working on Ruby in 1993. He's been working on it full time since 1997. He has managed a project that started with him and some friends and that now has thousands of contributors. He has curated the language with amazing skill, adding features sparingly and with great foresight. He has encouraged debate and (amazingly in current times) kept those discussions civil and productive. "Matz is Nice So We Are Nice" is the best kind of leadership; by example. | | |
| | | Matz has dedicated more than half his life to making developers happy. He has changed the world of programming, and he has changed my life profoundly. | | |
| | | Today, we get a Christmas present: Ruby 4. Let's take a moment to think about the effort, love, and leadership that makes that gift, and all the previous gifts, possible. | | |

This is the sixth edition of the book that I like to think helped Ruby grow worldwide. We're proud to have been part of this journey. |
