As software developers, we thrive on efficiency and we revel in performance gains. So it's no wonder that Ashley Peacock's curiosity was piqued from his very first encounter with serverless architecture. For Ashley, it all boils down to this: “You pay for what you use. So if you use one request, you pay for one request.” Or put another way, serverless scales to zero. If you have no requests, there is no cost. And that was the first step on Ashley's journey to becoming a self-proclaimed Cloudflare enthusiast.
We sat down with Ashley to discuss serverless architecture in general and his enthusiasm for Cloudflare in particular. Along the way we dug deep into the challenges of scaling large applications, tracking down bugs in complex environments, avoiding vendor lock-in, and even predicting what the future of infrastructure might look like. We even discussed the scenarios where serverless might not be the best choice, computationally expensive functionality, and much more.
